7 Nights & 6 Rounds of Golf from € 1603 per person
On arrival to Shannon Airport you will be met by a Tailor-Made Golf Tours representative and your chauffeur if applicable. After the tour bus has been loaded or your self-drive vehicle collected the journey to Dromoland Castle G.C. will take 10 minutes.
Dromoland Castle Golf and Country Club has been in existence since 1962 with golf being played over the lush rolling tree lined landscape that drains into Dromoland Lough with the Castle as a backdrop. The present course opened for play in April 2004 after a lavish restoration of both the golf course and castle. The course architects, Ron Kirby and the late JB Carr teamed up again, following their success at the Old Head of Kinsale, to produce a great parkland challenge that meanders through the estate amongst fine trees and around many natural lakes. The golf course then finishes in fine style in front of the castle. The highlight of golf at Dromoland is the immaculate greens that are true and lightning fast - they are claimed to be the fastest in Ireland.
After golf the journey to Westport will take 2 hours.
Westport is a picturesque, planned town on the River Carrowbeg as it flows to Clew Bay. There are numerous restaurants and pubs to consider, perhaps the most famous of the latter is Matt Molloys owned by one of the Chieftains and certain to have Irish music.
Northeast through Castlebar, the county town of Mayo, and Ballina on the River Moy to Enniscrone just across the border in County Sligo. Total time is just over an hour.
On the Moy Estuary, Enniscrone is a truly magnificent golf links with the original Eddie Hackett layout now modified to provide 18 testing holes of the highest quality. Enniscrone used to be a very good links - since 2001, six new holes were added in the dunes and some of the holes which lay on the flat terrain were removed. The result is that Enniscrone can legitimately compete for top ratings in Irish links golf. Crucial to making a good score here are lines to take from the tee, bunker positioning and when to lay up rather than risk a double bogey by going for the well protected greens. From the first hole you are tested, a great opener with out of bounds on the right to an elevated green nestled in the foot high dunes, to the recently remodelled 18th where a new green and strategic bunkering are designed to trip you up at the last hurdle, you will be challenged throughout.
After golf visit the seaweed baths where the iodine is reputed to help with aches and pains or take a walk on the magnificent beach. South of Ballina are the Foxford Woollen Mills while near Castlebar on the main N5 route is the Museum of Country Life.
A fascinating journey through wild blanket bog that lies before the remote town of Belmullet. Total time to Carne is 1½ hours.
Carne is the unanimous choice of all of us at Tailor-Made Golf Tours as our favourite course in Ireland. Apart from being a hugely challenging links course, there is a wonderful sense of being in another world when treading the sandy fairways and dunes. One can understand the connection between Carne and the old Irish legend of The Children of Lir. This Eddie Hackett designed masterpiece among the towering dunes will charm you as much as it challenges you. From the moment of arrival, Belmullet exudes an air of specialty. The splendid scenery, the proximity to the ocean and the visual appeal of the links itself are all-pervading. "I am thrilled with the way the dramatic Belmullet course has turned out, and again I reiterate my first opinion that ultimately there will be no better links golf course in the country or I doubt anywhere" said Eddie Hackett. Carne was his last design and his eternal legacy - enjoy!.
Returning to Westport through the wild blanket bog it is worth visiting the visitor centre at Ballycroy. Wild Nephin National Park is a vast (118 sq. km.) peat bog, one of the largest in Europe and there are many walks and trails available. The visitor centre explains the many habitats and species that the park supports. A visit to lovely Achill Island would be a diversion and an alternative would be the comfort of one of our favourite Irish pubs, 'The Grainne Uaile' across the bridge in Newport
Westport Golf Club overlooks Clew Bay 2½ miles northwest of the town centre.
Westport is one of Ireland's leading parkland courses laid out in 250 acres of rolling parkland once part of the Westport House estate. One of the main attractions of Westport is its location looking across Clew Bay to Croagh Patrick beyond and the most memorable holes at Westport are those that oplay along the shoreline. The par-3 12th is the first of these, a tee-shot from an elevated tee - that plays to a green 220 yards away (back tees) -offers stunning views but if the prevailing wind is blowing the green can be hard to reach! The par-5 15th is Westport's signature hole, hugging the shoreline with a tee-shot requiring a carry over a gully. Fred Hawtree designed Westport in 1973 and at 7,000 yards from the back tees it is fair to say that Westport offers challenge and beauty in equal measure.
After golf consider a journey through Newport and on to Achill Island (25 miles), Ireland\'s largest 'island'. Achill is accessible by landbridge and is a beautiful place. The mountain interior - dominated by Slievemore mountain at 671m and Croaghaun at 668m - looks over miles of rocky coastline including stunning cliffs. At sea-level there are five blue-flag beaches on the island. Achill also has a pleasant 9-hole golf course at Keel while Calveys restaurant is Bridgestone Guide recommended for its natural Achill lamb.
A free day to explore the beautty of County Mayo and/or Connemara. The day could start with a journey along the southern shore of Clew Bay, past Croagh Patrick, to Louisburgh. From Louisburgh south across Doo Lough Pass to Leenaun with some memorable scenery between Mweelrea Mountain and the Sheffry Hills. Descending from Doo Lough the road then veers east along the shore of Kilary Harbour, Ireland's only fjord. From Leeenaun enter Connemara, surely Ireland's most gorgeous region. A visit to Kylemore Abbey would be possible although the direct route would be to travel through Joyce Country, the mountain interior of Connemara to end up back in County Mayo at Cong. Cong is a very pictureque village renowned as the filming location for the move 'The Quiet Man' as well as for Ashford Castle, one of Ireland's leading hotels. Cong is just 45 minutes north of Galway.
Galway is Ireland's best city mainly due to the chilled and relaxed atmosphere along its pedestrian streets where there are mnay pubs and restaurants and much 'ceol agus craic'. Galway a popular destination and there are plenty of quality accommodations to choose from.
Galway Bay lies on an outcrop of land that faces back to Galway City across the 'real' Galway Bay, near the village of Renville, southwest of the town of Oranmore. It normally takes about 30 minutes to drive from Eyre Square.
Galway Bay is a dramatic course where the name comes from the natural water hazard of the same name which provides the backdrop to this Par 72 PGA Championship golf course. When designing the course, former Ryder Cup and World Cup golfer Christy O'Connor Jnr superbly blended the stunning backdrop of Galway Bay and the rugged curves of the Atlantic coastline with mature trees, water hazards, concealed bunkers and highly acclaimed putting surfaces. The course was redesigned in 2008 to provide more visibility of the surrounding ocean and provide a more links like feel with remodelled greens that feature increased mounding and run off areas. With variable wind speed and directions the course plays differently each day posing a considerable challenge to even the lowest handicap golfers, yet it is a true and fair test of golf.
After golf the transfer to Galway City will take 30 minutes.
Connemara G.C. is almost at the most southwestern point of County Galway, 3½ miles west of the vaillage of Ballyconneely. The journey from Galway city take 1½ scenic hours.
Connemara Golf Club is a true links course situated on the western coast of County Galway. The scenery is stunning on a sunny day with the Atlantic to the west and south and the rugged Twelve Bens and Maamturk mountain ranges to the east. The 'gentle' opening offers a chance to start well and to put some decent numbers on the card. Given this chance to warm-up, this great links slowly starts to turn the screw with a fabulous stretch of holes from the 8th to the 18th. The par-3 13th is a beautiful golf hole and in many people's opinion Connemara's signature hole. Standing on the tee you know you need a pure strike on the ball to get on the green. Anything short will roll back 30 yards and anything left or right will be gathered by bunkers. Unusually, there are two magnificent Par-5's to finish and you can be guaranteed one of them will be into a sea breeze. Peter Allis commented "If there were a course like this on the west coast of England it would surely host a British Open"
The pretty village of Roundstone is worth visiting and marks the start of a route that has endless possibilities through the southern Connemara region to Galway. Alternatively return through Clifden, the 'Capital of Connemara' and take a trip through 'Joyce Country', the interior rugged mountain landscape of Connemara. End at the famous village of Cong, between Lough Mask and Lough Corrib where the movile 'The Quiet Man' was filmed.
After a final night in Galway the journey to Shannon Airport will take 1¼ hours.
