St. Patrick's College Chapel at Maynooth is one of the most beautiful chapels in Ireland. Further west is the Kilbeggan Distillery, one of the few and most authentic distilleries still working in Ireland.

Athlone offers a choice of four town centre hotels.

Day 2

Glasson Golf Course

The golf course at Glasson is 20 minutes northeast of Athlone

Glasson Golf Course

Glasson is beautifully located on the south-east shore of Lough Ree and boasts lake views from every hole (the first nine are beside Killinure Bay, an inlet of Lough Ree). Glasson is another Christy O'Connor Jnr. design and another challenging course from the blue or white tees. The par 5's are of particular note, especially the sixth and fourteenth holes. The 6th is long, with out of bounds all along the left and a small lake guarding the right hand side making the second shot quite challenging. The 14th plays from an elevated tee and sweeps downwards to the lake shore and is a very exciting hole. The crescendo comes at the very next - Glasson's signature par 3 where the backs tees are accessed by a bridge and the green is 180 yards away all carry across the lake. As with all O'Connor Jnr. designs, the course fits naturally into its surrounds and presents a challenge that feels particular to this lakeside location.

Day 3

Portumna Golf Course

Portumna is 45 minutes south-south-west of Athlone at the northern end of Lough Derg.

Portumna Golf Course

Portumna golf course started as 9 holes at the present site in the middle of Portumna Forest Park in 1934. Since then the course has been continuously improved starting with land acquisition in the 1970's and extension to 18 holes in 1992. Further land has allowed further development and today Portumna continues to grow in stature and rival courses such as Athlone as the premier tournament venue in Connacht. The course is classic parkland, fairways flanked by enormous trees and greens inevitably closely guarded by large bunkers. There are two 440 yard par 4's in the first three holes to grab the attention that is needed for the erst of the round, none more so than at the signature par 5 17th - where a blind tee-shot is only the beginning of a dramatic hole where the approach is then flanked by Portumna's only water hazard. Portumna is an underrated parkland challenge that is well worth the extra miles.

Day 4

Athlone Golf Course

Athlone golf course is 10 minutes northwest of the town on the shores of Hodson Bay.

Athlone Golf Course

Athlone is as good a test of golf as any course in Ireland that has stood the test of time since its opening in 1938. Situated on the southwest shore of Lough Ree, a major renovation in the early years of this century aimed to make more of the stunning views available on two sides of the course while also upgrading the tees and greens to modern standards. From the first tee box, perched high above the fairway and getting our vote as #1 parkland opening hole, the course provides a varied and interesting challenge with mature trees and three natural ponds providing the first line of defence, while the relatively few bunkers are strategically placed and offer further challenge. The round climaxes with a mirror image of the first, a tee shot from an elevated tee to a tree lined fairway below and then a semi-blind second back up the the green in front of the clubhouse.

Athlone Castle is well worth a visit and afterwards Sean's Bar is reputed to be the oldest bar in Ireland dating from 900 A.D.

Day 5

Mullingar Golf Course

Mullingar golf course is 40 minutes from Athlone (using M6 motorway)

Mullingar Golf Course

The layout of Mullingar golf course is the work of the legendary James Braid (who also designed Tullamore at the same time). Although modifications have been made since its opening in 1935, Mullingar remains today as Braid intended, a championship calibre course that flows through mature trees once part of the old Belvedere estate. Being in the heart of Ireland's midland bogs, Mullingar has a springy turf underfoot and the course is well balanced with the four par 3's being of particular note and, amongst these, the second hole stands out as Mullingar's signature hole. Even from the championhip tees Mullingar's relative shortness makes ordinary amateurs feel the course is playable - even elite amateurs (including winners Clarke, McGinley, Harrington, McIlroy and Lowry) who compete in the annual Scratch Cup have never scored better than the current course record of 64.

The journey from Mullingar to Tullamore takes approximately 35 minutes

There are three hotels to choose from, all located in the centre of Tullamore town.

Day 6

Tullamore Golf Course

Tullamore golf course is on the Kinnity/Roscrea road 10 minutes south of the town.

Tullamore Golf Course

Tullamore Golf Club moved to the current site in 1926 to a course designed by James Braid (who also designed Mullingar). The site at Brookfield was once part of the Charleville estate, the site of Ireland's most ancient primordial oak forests. Mature trees, many planted as famine relief projects in the mid 19th century, dominate the landscape. Several months after the course opened, members queried the lack of fairway bunkers by letter to Braid who replied by letter instructing that bunkers be placed in the fairway at the sopot where most divots were to be found. Patrick Merrigan upgraded the course in 1996 with new several new tees and greens, three new lakes and complentary plantatiions of trees - resulting in a course combining the best of Braid's design with enhanced design features. Several memorable holes on the stronger second nine are the highlights with the 16th, a dogleg to a green protected by a stream, being the signtaure hole at Tullamore.

Day 7

Esker Hills Golf Course

Esker Hills golf course is 10 minutes northwest of Tullamore.

Esker Hills Golf Course

Esker Hills is a Christy O'Connor Jnr. design that many would consider one oif his best. Eskers are narrow, long, winding hills that were deposited by streams flowing underneath glaciers and Junior sculpted a golf course that flows up, down and across these ridges to present a golfing challenge that is very different, exhilarating and very memorable. The approach to the 4th green plays directly up to the top of a ridge while the next is a memorable par-3 straight back down to a green flanked by a pond. The first nine finish with two terrific holes playing along the side of the hill. The second nine continues with a driveable par-4, two more memorable par-3's across chasms (all of the par 3's are over 170 yards) and a challenging final 3 holes including two of the four severe doglegs taht are another feature of the design. Shane Lowry played his amateur golf as a member here and in 2006 won the Irish Open as an amateur (at County Louth).

Day 8

Departure from Ireland

After a final night in Kinsale the journey to Shannon Airport will take 2½ hours, Dublin Airport is 3½ hours . Early morning flight departures may require the final night accommodation to be closer to the airport, Bunratty is a popular choice although Adare or Limerick City can also be considered. Cork Airport is closest for those travelling to or via U.K. or European destinations.
