Wicklow Golf Weekend

3 Nights & 3 Rounds of Golf from € 903 per person

Day 1

West Course at Powerscourt

Visit the old market town of Ennis with its narrow streets and Ennis Friary. Begin exploring The Burren. Take a route through Corofin to Kilfenora where The Burren Centre provides an informative overview of this unique region. Adjacent is Kilfenora Cathedral with some of the finest examples of Celtic high crosses. An extended tour takes in Caherconnell Stone Fort and Poulnabrone Dolmen while enjoying the unique limestone landscape. Ballyvaughan for refreshment before returning south on the spectacular coastal drive past Black Head and through Fanore to Doolin and The Cliffs of Moher.

West Course at Powerscourt

Powerscourt Estate was the home of the Wingfield family Viscounts of Powerscourt before being sold to the Slazenger Family in 1961. Unfortunately a devastating fire in 1974 led to the abandonment of the house as a dwelling and it was not until 1996 that Powerscourt reopened as a luxury hotel. The West Course is a Maclay Kidd design, in complete contract to the East Course by Peter McEvoy. The beautiful scenery and large greens are the feature of this challenging layout that tees-off from in front of iconic Powerscourt House. The greens are large and multi-levelled, finding the correct spot is crucial to surviving this test - wrong spots can lead to treacherous downhill chips and putts with greedy bunkers awaiting overhit shots. A variety of challenging holes are encountered as the course weaves through the old estate with the best saved for last as the finishing theree holes play back towards Powercourt House against the backdrop of the Wicklow Hills.

After golf the journey to Wicklow will take 30 minutes.

Wicklow Town is pleasantly located harbour town where The Bridge Inn offers good golfers accommodation. There are sveral other properties dispersed along the Wicklow coast including Druids Glen Resort and Hunters Hotel.

Day 2

Druids Glen

Druids Glen golf course is 20 minutes north of Wicklow Town.

Druids Glen

Druids Glen is a Ruddy/Craddock creation that opened in 1995 and a year after opening hosted the Irish Open for four consecutive years. The setting is absolutely beautiful - unspoilt and natural. The course simply winds its way though this beauty with simple additions of floral plantings and artistic topiary. The signature hole is the par-3 twelfth, the site of a 5th century druids altar that plays down across a stream to a beautifully situated green. Look back for the Druids Cross that features on most Druids Glen related material. The next hole is probably the best - a doglegging par-4 where the drive is from an elevated tee to the fairway below with water along the right. From here the green is across the water to what is essentially an island green. Both the 8th and 17th holes are par-3s with large water hazards, the 8th is beautiful the 17th is more akin to the same hole at TPC Sawgrass.

Day 3

The European Golf Links

The golf course at Brittas Bay is 15 minutes south of Wicklow Town.

The European Golf Links

A true and great links designed and owned by Pat Ruddy, one of Ireland's foremost golf architects whose credits also include Ballyliffin Glashedy and Sandy Hills at Rosapenna. But The European is his own course, the fulfillment of a dream and a labour of love that shows from the walk to the first tee to leaving the 18th green. South of Dublin on the County Wicklow coast, the course tumbles through massive sand dunes and provides stunning views of the Irish Sea. The course bears all the hallmarks of a Ruddy design - well defined holes with large undulating greens and severely punishing bunkers. There are some unique features too, some not universally liked, including the traditionally rivetted bunkers and the 150 yard long 12th green. There are two additional but optional par-3s to play and all holes are completely isolated from each other. Tiger Woods recorded the course record 67 on his first visit to the club.

Day 4

Departure from Ireland

After a final night in Kinsale the journey to Shannon Airport will take 2½ hours, Dublin Airport is 3½ hours . Early morning flight departures may require the final night accommodation to be closer to the airport, Bunratty is a popular choice although Adare or Limerick City can also be considered. Cork Airport is closest for those travelling to or via U.K. or European destinations.
